Today marks World Wetlands Day and to celebrate the day locally, Monaghan County Council ran a photography competition to celebrate the wetlands of Monaghan.
The completion theme was Monaghan's Wonderful wetlands and the competition encouraged people of all ages to get out in your local community and capture your local wetlands. With over 500 entries, the competition was immense and Monaghan Biodiversity officer Patricia McCreesh says she was bowled over by the reaction across the county.
There was 3 categories and was open to people of all ages. The competition winners for the Wetlands Photography Competition were as follows, in the U12 category 1st prize - Ella Thornton age 11 from St Michaels NS Corcaghan, 2nd Prize went to Hunter Ray age 11 and third prize went to Prize Michael Woods 5th Class in Blackstaff NS.
The U18 category winners were 1st prize went to 1st Prize - Eto Abekyamwale age 16, 2nd prize was Marija Cernikova Inver Collage age 14 and 3rd prize was awarded to Ella Curley age 17. While the adult winners were 1st prize went to Jimmy O'Neill, 2nd prize to Dalia Guzauskaite and 3rd prize went to Colette Gemmell.
Monaghan Biodiversity officer Patricia McCreesh says the competition was a real success and a wonderful way to celebrate World Wetlands Day.
