The Health Minister needs to clarify who signed-off on plans to continue paying Tony Holohan's salary despite him moving to a new job.
The Chief Medical Officer is to become a professor at Trinity College Dublin, in what it describes as an "open-ended secondment".
However the Department of Health will continue to pay his €187,000 wage.
Sinn Fein's health spokesperson, David Cullinane, says the whole situation is "very odd":
"Under questioning yesterday at the health committee by myself and others, the head of the health department Robert Watt accepted this was a permanent departure," continued Deputy Cullinane.
"So this cannot be seen as a secondment.
"Why is the Department of Health paying Dr Holohan's wages?
"I wish him well but if he is leaving the Department of Health and taking up a position in Trinity College then Trinity College should be paying his salary."
