A Cavan man has raised his concerns over the price of a pint which is set to go up from the middle of next month. The cost of a pint is to rise by 4 cent from August 14th.
It's the second time this year Diageo has increased its prices, and says it's down to rising costs. As a result of the move, Austin McGurren from Belturbet says he is "fearful" for the future of rural pubs, describing the latest price hike of 4 cent as the "final nail in the coffin" for rural pubs.
Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, Mr McGurren criticised Diageo's decision, stating that many people can "no longer afford" to support their local publican.
He believes Diageo's desire to "make a profit" will have dire consequences for rural Ireland. "In the last six months of 2022, Diageo made a profit 3.6 billion euro, it's as if they want to close rural Ireland off altogether," warned Austin.
