"We're now on the runway to a general election." That 's according to political commentator Sean McKiernan. Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, the Cavan man believes we are entering a "different phase" in the life of the current Government, adding that a general election is on the cards, whether that be in two tears time or later this year.
Labour has confirmed it will use its private members’ time next week to bring forward a motion of no confidence in the Government over the end of the eviction ban. Meanwhile, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said a no-confidence vote on the Government will be defeated by "significant margin" next week. Despite this, Mr McKiernan described this period as a "dangerous time" for the Government, and believes the Dáil will go to the end of its term due to fear.
"I personally think psychology will ultimately kick-in and I think the Dáil itself will go to the end of its term, or as near as people because people will be afraid of the alternative and the consequences," he explained.
