Sinn Fein's Cathy Bennett is on a mission to "change the face of politics" to ensure there is strong female representation across the country. Cllr Bennett retained her seat after topping the poll in the Monaghan Municipal District area.
Speaking to Northern Sound following her re-election, Cllr Bennett outlined her "drive" and "commitment" when it comes to changing the face of politics for the benefit of women from all backgrounds and ages. Cllr Bennett also believes that it is "only fair" to have an equal number of male and female representatives on county council's not only in Monaghan but right across the country. Sinn Fein in Co Monaghan ran a total of ten candidates, five of which were female including Cllr Bennett. The other four candidates were Sinead Flynn (Ballybay-Clones) Aoife Kindlon (Carrickmacross-Castleblayney) Niamh McCooey (Monaghan MD) Bronagh McAree (Monaghan MD). Both Sinead Flynn and Bronagh McAree alongside Cathy Bennett were officially elected onto Monaghan County Council.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Bennett stated; "I have sat on Monaghan County Council for a time where I was the only female alongside 17 men. That is why there is such a drive and commitment within me to change the face of politics in Co Monaghan. Really and truly we should have nine women and nine men on Monaghan County Council and on every council across the country there should be equal representation but that is not the way it is. I want to change the face of politics right across Ireland to ensure that we have strong female representation to support women and to let women know - you can do it, no problem."
