More Gardaí are needed in Co Monaghan to deal with rising crime rates. That's according to Cllr Seamus Treanor who has called on the Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee and Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris to provide much-needed resources to the Cavan Monaghan Garda Division.
Speaking to Northern Sound, the local councillor said there has been a spate of robberies from houses, farm yards and builders in Monaghan over the last few months. He highlighted the devastation experienced by one family he knows who returned home to a ransacked house.
Cllr Treanor added that the full rigours of the law must be applied to those who engage in this type of crime. "There should be harder laws for people [who engage in this]. When a person goes into the court, how devastating must it be for the Gardaí and the family involved, when that person then walks out the door of the court and gives them the two fingers.
"We need a new prison in this country - and I have been saying this for quite some time now - because what is wrong now is that they are going in one door of a prison and walking out the other. Then there going back down the road on a bus to Monaghan or whatever other part of the country they come from. We need to take a hands-on approach to this," he said.
