A proposed waste compactor in Monaghan town has been described as 'a threat to Ireland's recycling efforts'.
An appeal has been lodged against BIGbin Waste Tech Ltd's plans to develop a pay-to-use portable compactor at Circle K on the N2.
At the end of last month, Monaghan County Council approved the planning application which would see the development of two pay-to-use portable waste compactors - one for residual and food waste, and the other for mixed dry recycling.
BIGbin says its business model is an alternative to bin collection services for low usage customers or can be used for supplementary disposal.
Waste management consultants SLR Consulting Ireland made a submission on the original application and appealed the decision to An Bord Pleanala.
It says the proposal is contrary to the Monaghan County Development Plan; there is kerbside bin collection provided in the area; and a network of bring centres are nearby.
In the original submission, SLR added that it failed to see how paying €8 for rubbish disposal would deter people from choosing to dump illegally.
A decision on the appeal is expected in January 2023.
