'Gardaí in Navan have opened an investigation and are appealing for information in relation to the incident'

Vandalism at the ancient Lia Fail standing stone on the Hill of Tara in Co Meath is under investigation by Gardaí. The word "fake" was painted on the 5,000 year-old stone, which is one of the main attractions at the former seat of the High Kings of Ireland.

In a statement to Northern Sound, a Garda spokesman confirmed they were investigating criminal damage to the monument, which was reported yesterday. He stated, "Criminal damage to the Lia Fail or Stone of Destiny, Standing Stone on the Hill of Tara in County Meath was reported to Gardaí on Tuesday 7th February 2023.

"It’s understood graffiti damage was caused to the stone sometime between Monday evening, 6th February and Tuesday morning, 7th February. Gardaí at Navan have commenced an investigation and are appealing for information."

In a statement posted to social media, the 'Mythical Ireland' group said it was "absolutely horrified" to report that Lia Fáil (The Stone of Destiny) had been daubed with graffiti. The statement continued; "This is another attack on this ancient monument. Disgraceful and disappointing to see how some of Ireland's most precious archaeological treasures have been treated by thugs in recent times. The problem is this sort of thing is almost impossible to police, without closing off access to all our monuments. Shame on the person or people who did this."
