Local TD for Cavan and Monaghan, Niamh Smyth has welcomed confirmation from Uisce Éireann that approximately 6,000 residents of Co Cavan are set to benefit from the start of major upgrade works on the Virginia Wastewater Treatment Plant.
This significant project is a joint effort between Uisce Éireann and Cavan County Council, involving a substantial investment of €33 million.
Deputy Smyth said that this investment is a game-changer for Virginia and the surrounding areas.
She said the upgrade of the wastewater treatment plant is crucial not only for environmental sustainability but also for the social and economic development of our community. The increased capacity of the sewer network will future-proof against projected population growth.'
The comprehensive upgrade will include major improvements to the wastewater treatment plant, pumping station, existing storm tanks, and the installation of new rising mains. The works, which commenced this month, are due to be completed in late 2026
