A local councillor says it's "unacceptable" that new beds promised for Monaghan Hospital have yet to be brought on stream.
Seamus Treanor said the shortages have been highlighted after a patient in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital was told there was no capacity in Monaghan to provide step-down care, and she'd have to be admitted to a nursing home.
The Independent representative said the hospital needs to be brought up to a standard that will allow local people be looked after.
Last month it was confirmed the hospital would be getting more beds for winter, but there was no timeframe given.
Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound, Seamus Treanor said the current set-up is inadequate at a time when people mightn't want to enter a nursing home.
