The restoration of the Ulster Canal will be a symbol of reconciliation according to one local Minister.
The redevelopment project was carried out by Waterways Ireland and saw the complete restoration of 1.5km of the Ulster Canal from Clones to Clonfad. Taoiseach Simon Harris and Tánaiste Micheál Martin, are in Clones to officially mark the completion of phase 2 of the project consisting of a new marina, two new access bridges, looped walk and 1km of restored canal and towpath.
Speaking ahead of the launch on the Joe Finnegan Show, Minister Heather Humphreys said the completed project will benefit the entire region in a number of areas.
"It's a project that will deliver so much in terms of economic and social benefits to the region but I think the most important thing is that the project is a symbol of peace and reconciliation for decades to come. We'll put the past behind us, this is about the future. Canals are so important and I've always been committed to ensuring that we would deliver this canal for Clones. So, the second phase over. The third phase will join Clones to Castlesaunderson. It's been a long journey".
