A Monaghan musician claimed one of the top prizes at the prestigious 'BRIT Awards' on Saturday night. Conor Curley from Tyholland who is a past pupil of St Macartan's College and a former player with Monaghan Harps GAA and Monaghan United FC scooped the 'International Group Of The Year' Award with his band - Fontaines D.C.
The Tyholland man was unable to attend the award show along with other bandmates, due to touring commitments in Australia but sent a video message for fans from the land-down-under on the night. The 2023 BRIT Awards was aired live on television screens from the 02 Arena in London and pulled in 3.9 million viewers during its broadcast on Saturday night.
Back in 2020, the group was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rock Album category for their second album "A Hero's Death." Fontaines D.C. were also shortlisted for two national music awards after the nominees for this year's 'RTÉ Choice Music Prize Irish Song of the Year 2022' was announced last month.
The popular band has been selected in the Irish Artist of the Year 2022 and Irish Breakthrough Artist of the Year 2022 categories. The RTE national awards in association with IMRO and IRMA will be announced on the 5th of March.
