Two young people have been killed on the notorious A5 road in the north. A 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl lost their lives in the single vehicle collision involving their blue BMW car. It happened at around 9:50pm on the Doorgary Road near Omagh. The road was closed overnight but has since been re-opened.
It is the latest tragedy on one of Northern Ireland’s most dangerous roads. The A5 road links to the N2 on this side of the border from Aughnacloy to Emyvale and is the main route from County Monaghan to Omagh and Derry.
A planned upgrade to the A5 has been stalled since it was announced in 2007. In February, the Irish government pledged a funding package of €600 million for the roads upgrade.
