Two men in their 30's have appeared at a special sitting of the District Court in Monaghan over the weekend charged in connection with the theft of outboard boat engines.
Last Thursday afternoon, Gardai in Ballyconnell stopped a car and discovered two outboard boat engines concealed in the rear of the vehicle.
Both men were arrested at the scene and detained at Cavan Garda Station for questioning.
They were subsequently charged with theft related offences. Investigations are currently continuing by local Gardaí.
Meanwhile Gardaí across the region say they have seen a notable rise so far this summer in the theft of outboard boat engines. They are asking if possible to bring your engine home and store it safely.
Don't moor your boat in an isolated area leaving it easier for criminals. If its not practical to remove your engine use a quality lock. Consider an additional lock and chain and anchor it to a fixed point on the pier or similar. Take a photograph of your boat and engine and record any serial numbers and consider marking your engine with your Eircode.
Gardaí from the Cavan Monaghan division say by taking some of these simple steps makes it harder for thieves to succeed.
