Two candidates have been selected in the Hotel Kilmore this evening at the Fine Gael Convention.
Cllr David Maxwell and Cllr TP O’Reilly has been chosen by the members of Fine Gael that voted in the contest to see who would run in the upcoming General Election.
Minister Heather Humphreys announced her plans to step away from politics over the weekend leaving a sure Fine Gael seat in this constituency up for grabs.
Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, T P O'Reilly has been chosen as a Cavan-based candidate while Cllr David Maxwell has been chosen as the Monaghan based candidate.
Tributes were paid throughout the evening to Minister Heather Humphreys. Justice Minister Helen McEntee were in attendance along with MEP Nina Carberry and Senator Micheál Carrigy.
Senator Joe O’Reilly missed out after he didn’t receive enough votes to be given the go ahead to contest the elections.
The only other person to put their name forward was Cllr Aidan Campbell who withdrew his name from the convention before it began.
Northern Sound FM understands Fine Gael are considering putting a third candidate on the ticket in the region. It’s understood they are on the lookout for a female candidate in the region to represent the party.
