Gardaí in Cavan have arrested two women pretending to be collecting money for Irish Wheelchair Association.
These women were not affiliated with the organisation. Local Gardaí are appealing for vigilance with anybody collecting money for charities.
You are being reminded that those collecting all require permits and if legitimate will have no issue providing people with identification. These arrests in Cavan yesterday follow reports of bogus collectors operating in various areas across the North East purporting to be from the Irish Wheelchair Association. These individuals have been spotted with clipboards and selling lines in the likes of Navan, Drogheda, and Carrickmacross among other places.
All IWA collectors will be wearing a branded high-vis jacket and will have an IWA-branded bucket for donations. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning, Pamela Kavanagh from the Irish Wheelchair Association says they were made aware of these bogus collectors through vigilant people in the community. If in doubt, individuals are encouraged to ask for proof of identification from collectors. Any concerns or suspicions should be reported to the local Garda station for further investigation.
Gardaí in Cavan say that these two arrested will now face a court date in relation to these bogus claims that have been used to remove people of their money.
