The Government is being criticised for its “mixed messaging” over the proposed ban on the sale and supply of turf.
A local TD says it is also out of touch with rural communities.
Deputy Pauline Tully highlighted how, many people rely on turf in Cavan-Monaghan and the ban will only serve to punish them.
She said the ban is the “wrong move at the wrong time”.
Sinn Féin, she added, will oppose the ban and continue to advocate for climate action and public health measures that do not penalise those without alternatives.
“Government must acknowledge that for many, turf is not simply a source of heating, it is part of rural life," Deputy Tully continued.
“This proposed ban on the sale of turf is the wrong move at the wrong time and will penalise the wrong people.
“Sinn Féin will oppose this measure and continue to advocate for climate action and public health measures that do not penalise those without alternatives.”
