Tributes have been paid to a Co Cavan woman who died following her battle with Motor Neurone Disease on Monday. 58-year-old Marilyn O'Connor from Drumlaney was given the life changing diagnosis of motor neurone disease back in August 2022. Despite the initial shock, Marilyn previously told Northern Sound that she was "determined" to share her story with the world and create a better awareness about the condition. As a result of her determination, the award-winning author went on to raise thousands of euro for various MND charities. Previously speaking to Northern Sound, Marilyn vowed that for as long as she has her voice, she wanted to use it for speaking up as a woman and a mother living with the condition. "My mission and my reason for sharing my story is to raise awareness of MND in women. For every 60% of men that are diagnosed there are 40% women diagnosed; although less common it is a huge statistic, with one person is newly diagnosed every three days."
Earlier this year, the Crossdoney native chained herself to the gates of St Davnet's Campus in protest over the need for round the clock care, showing yet again her strength, courage and determination. The Funeral Service of the late Marilyn O'Connor will take place tomorrow (Thursday) at St Fethlimidh’s Cathedral at 2pm, followed by committal and burial in Kilmore Cathedral parish graveyard.
