Winston Turner has been described as "a man of great integrity" and "a stalwart advocate for the people of east Cavan".

The former Councillor passed away this morning in Cavan General Hospital.

He was first elected to the County Council in 1991 as part of the Cavan Roads Action Group and subsequently served as an independent Councillor.

He lost his seat at the 2004 local elections.

Mr Turner is survived by his wife Hazelene and six children.

Council Cathaoirleach Sarah O'Reilly today paid tribute to him for his work saying he was a "friend and mentor" and "the driving force behind many important community initiatives in Bailieborough".

Former Councillor and Chair of the Bailieborough Mental Health Association Seán McKiernan has also praised him for his work.

He's said Winston Turner, who's a former Chair and honourary President of the Association, "worked hard with his fellow volunteers in the late 1990s and early 2000s to help break down the stigma surrounding mental illness - this is something we now almost take for granted today, but it took time to break down".
