Crossmaglen Rangers player Caolan Finnegan has passed away at the age of 20.
Last August, Caolan, or Stringer, as he was widely known to his friends, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. Days after playing in the Armagh senior championship for his club against Clan na Gael, Caolan was preparing for surgery to remove a brain tumour.
He represented Armagh at all underage grades and is a past pupil of St Joseph's Crossmaglen and St Colman's College Newry. Tributes are pouring in this afternoon. The Staff, Students and Board of Governors of St Colman’s College have paid tribute to Caolan who was a past pupil.
He has been described as a true warrior through his biggest fight. Another tribute said that his name and memory will live on forever in everyone’s heart. The organisers of an event linked to Armagh GAA which was set to take place on Sunday night at the Armagh City Hotel to celebrate the county’s win said it has now been postponed. A fundraising group Care For Caolan set up to raise money for Caolan’s treatment said on Friday: “It is with deep sadness and regret that we inform you of the untimely passing of our dear Caolan ‘Stringer’. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
