Some 27 people from Monaghan withe the surname "Treanor" have made their way across the Atlantic to take part in a clan gathering on Prince Edward Island, Canada. It's the first time the Treanor gathering has taken place outside of Monaghan where evidence suggests the name originated at the foot of Sliabh Beag.
Even people with variations on the spelling of the Treanor name, including anyone with the surname McCreanor, have been invited to a weekend of events on the picturesque island off the east coast of Canada. Treanors from Ireland, Canada, the United States and beyond are all immersing themselves in family history as participants can contribute to a DNA project and book project, take part in a tour of the island famous for the Anne of Green Gables novel, and meet with Treanors old and new in the pub.
Northern Sound's Noel Murphy has also made the trip from Monaghan where he has already made friends with Canadian Treanors: "Well, I think we have 27 from Ireland and a lot from the United States so, we've a lot of people coming from Canada as well," Kevin Treanor from Prince Edward Island told Northern Sound. Another resident and event organiser, Anne Treanor-Purdy added: "Everyone is extremely excited about coming. I think people are looking to re-connect with people they saw back in '22, getting together with all our family and making new friends, meeting new people and telling stories and sharing stories with one another."
