Cavan-Monaghan TD Brendan Smith used question time in the Dáil to ask the MInister, Eamon Ryan, for more money to fix local roads.

A request for additional funding to repair Cavan and Monaghan roads has been made directly to the roads minister. Cavan-Monaghan TD Brendan Smith used question time in the Dáil to ask the MInister, Eamon Ryan, for more money to fix local roads.

Reading from a transcript, the Transport Minister, told the TD that Monaghan received €17m and Cavan, €18m, for the maintenance and improvement of their roads in 2024. If more money is required, Eamon Ryan advised Brendan Smith it is up to both local authorities to make the case for that funding under the National Development Plan.

In response, Deputy Smith reiterated his point that Cavan and Monaghan are almost completely dependent on non-national roads, which have all been damaged during prolonged periods of rainfall. "I think it's95 per cent of our road network in County Cavan that is classified as non-national; it's regional and local," Deputy Brendan Smith told the Transport Minister, "even when you travel the best motorways in the country  now it's evident the damage the heavy raionfall, which, has been consistent for many, many months in recent times, If it's damaging exceptionally-built, well-constructed, optimum-built roads, you can just imagine the damage it's doing to our local roads."
