A local councillor has called for traffic calming measures to be put in place for motorists exiting the Park Road onto the Clones Road beside the Coral leisure centre, just outside of Monaghan Town. Sinn Fein’s Sean Conlon asked if it would be possible for the Council to install a yellow traffic junction box on the road at a recent meeting of the Monaghan Municipal District.
According to Cllr Conlon the installation of a yellow box would go a long way in terms of relieving congestion and enhancing safety at this busy junction. In a response issued to Cllr Conlon on this issue, Monaghan County Council stated that investigations would need to be carried out on the junction of the N54 and Park Road by the TII and National Road Office. Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Conlon said even though works are not within the “remit” of the local authority, he hopes that TII will listen to concerns in order to reach a positive outcome sooner rather than later.
"It's one of the busiest intersections in Monaghan Town," explained Cllr Conlon. "However it's not within the remit of our local authority to create this much needed initiative through the yellow traffic junction box. As it's on a national primary route on the N54, work must be done through the TII, therefore that correspondence will be forwarded to the TII with a positive outcome and hopefully that can see the urgent need for this to be installed."
