Today marks the 40th anniversary of the deaths of Garda recruit Gary Sheehan and Patrick Kelly in Leitrim in 1983.
The two men were shot dead by the IRA as they took part in a search operation for kidnapped Quinnsworth CEO Don Tidey.
Recruit Garda Gary Sheehan who was from Carrickmacross was one of a number of recruits undergoing training at Templemore, who were sent to supplement the search over a wide area of Derrada Woods outside Ballinamore.
The Supermarket CEO Don Tidey was rescued safely at the scene, but no one has ever been charged in relations to the deaths of Paddy Kelly or Gary Sheehan.
A Mass of remembrance for the life of the late Garda will take place in St Joseph's Church Carrickmacross on 22nd of December at 7.30pm
