A long serving postmaster in Monaghan has called it a day after 35 years service.
Ciaran McEntee was the postmaster in Threemilehouse and ran Cormac's Newsagents for well over 3 decades. With no-one left to take over the running of the shop and post office, the doors closed for the final time at 7pm on Friday. Mr McEntee says the job was advertised four times, but the fee equates to less than minimum wage. Now at pension age, the retired postmaster and former vice president of the Irish Postmasters Union says it's time for him to step back and enjoy life.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Ciaran is still encouraging locals to use their local post office, or risk losing them.
"As I said hundreds of times when we were fighting for the money off the Government, use it or lose it. All the people out around Monaghan, Cavan, Meath, and Louth go into your Post Office. Pay your TV license, a bill, buy stamps, and that keeps them there. At least it gives them another transaction and that's why we tried to transfer all the pensioners or people claiming benefits to other local Post Offices the same as mine".
