Three people have appeared at Cavan District Court charged in relation to a serious assault in Monaghan Town.
The serious assault that has left a man in his 40s fighting for his life at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin occurred on Tuesday night last.
Brothers Jason (25) and Stephen Maughan (23) both of Mullaghmatt, Monaghan and Molly Roberts (21), Lakeview, Enagh, Monaghan appeared before Judge Raymond Finnegan at Cavan District Court today charged with assault causing harm to Declan Wallace on the Park Road in Monaghan Town.
The court heard that prior to the assault there was an earlier altercation between the Maughan brothers and Mr Wallace. This was filmed on CCTV and was verbal in nature.

During a contested bail hearing, Detective Sergeant Ciara Hayes told the court that bail was a major concern for Gardai due to the fact that they had all left the jurisdiction after the assault travelling throughout the night across areas in Northern Ireland like Enniskillen and Roslea.
Detective Sergeant Hayes did point out that both Maughan brothers voluntarily presented themselves at Monaghan Garda Station on Wednesday morning and it was only afterwards when Ms Robert’s arrived in her vehicle to the Garda Station after this when Gardai arrested over because her car was captured on CCTV.
In the case of the bail application for both Maughan brothers, Judge Raymond Finnegan said he believed to be a extreme flight risk and he remanded them to appear before Monaghan District Court on Monday morning the 20th of January via video-link.
In the case of Ms Robert’s with an address in Enagh Co Monaghan, the judge said he would allow her bail on number of conditions but one was that a €2,500 independent surety was required that was not possible and she was remanded to Monaghan District Court on Monday the 20th of January also.
Ms Robert’s solicitor had asked if his client could be present in court so that they could organise the independent surety to be arranged.
