A special event yesterday in Monaghan marked the 50th anniversary of the death of Senator Billy Fox, who was murdered by the IRA in 1974.
Fine Gael Senator Billy Fox from Cortubber was only 34 when he was murdered and he remains the only member of the Oireachtas to be killed during the Troubles. Yesterday afternoon's events commemoration centred around a "man of peace" and yet there has been a lack of peace seen across the country in recent days.
During his speech today at the ceremony Simon Harris also addressed the bomb threat on his party colleague and Justice Minister Helen McEntee's house in Meath on Wednesday night last that saw her husband and two young children evacuated.
Speaking at the event the Taoiseach said his killing was an attack on democracy. Meanwhile, The Cathaoirleach of the Ballybay-Clones Municipal District, Sean Gilliland addressing the people gathered at the Billy Fox Memorial Park said the senators killing was a huge blow to the local community adding that his legacy of a man of peace will live on forever.
