Monaghan County Council is to recognise the work done by frontline staff during storm Éowyn with a series of 'thank you events'. Cavan County Council meanwhile, says it is "currently exploring options" on how to appropriately recognise workers in the Breffni County.
The two county councils of the Northern Sound region are looking into the idea after the cathaoirleach of Longford County Council suggested hosting a 'thank you event' for staff in that part of the Shannonside region. Independent Longford Councillor Mark Casey mooted the idea on the Joe Finnegan Show earlier this week but the reaction from the listeners was mixed.
While some thought it was a good way to thank those who worked to restore normality in the days after Éowyn, other listeners disapproved of so-called 'thank you events' for people who were just doing what they are paid to do. Cavan County Council said "no such call has been made for a similar event in Cavan, however, county council staff, management and councillors alike are united in their appreciation of, and gratitude to, our frontline colleagues."
Monaghan County Council issued a statement read out by Joe Finnegan setting out its plans for events to celebrate and thank council staff, volunteers and emergency crews:
