The housing sector has been described as “wholly unfair” by a local TD.
The issue has come to the fore again after news an investment fund bought a whole housing estate in Kildare to place the houses on the rental market.
Sinn Féin has criticised the lack of action by successive Governments to tackle so called “cuckoo funds”.
The Government is drawing up plans on how to stop funds buying property, which in turn drives up house prices for members of the public.
Local TD Pauline Tully told The Wider View today that this is not just a problem for the capital city:
The Dáil will debate the issue of cuckoo funds buying up Irish estates this evening.
Opposition parties have called on the government to intervene urgently to give first time buyers a chance to compete.
The Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien met with the Ministers for Finance and Public Expenditure this morning to discuss the issue.
