A local TD has called for the Government to intervene after rents in Cavan increased by more than 20% in the past year. Sinn Féin TD Pauline Tully is calling for a ban on rent increases for all new and existing tenancies for three years and for the Government to put a 'full month's rent pack' into every private renter's pocket.
The Cavan TD made the calls after a Daft.ie report stated that rents in her constituency have increased by 21.3% in the past 12 months. "New rents now stand at a staggering €1,227," she said in a statement. Calling the current rates "totally unaffordable" for people on ordinary salaries in Cavan, Ms Tully said "people need a break from sky high rents now".
The TD also said the Government has lost control of the housing market and failed to deliver a sufficient volume of social and affordable homes. In the same Daft.ie research document, it is reported that the average rent paid in Monaghan stands at €1,173 per month.
