The result of a ballot in relation to workers at Tara Mines is expected to be known by noon today. It is understood that the proposed deal includes a retainer payment for staff and a clause that they can return to work under the same conditions when the mine reopens.
The mine is to be temporarily closed tomorrow and 650 workers will be laid off. Adrian Kane, a divisional organiser at Siptu, says all three unions have recommended the acceptance of the proposals.
"People will have made up their own decision and that is what being a member of a union is all about. All three unions recommended acceptance but obviously emotions are running high.
We are just going to have sit back and wait to see what the result of the ballot is. Then we will have to assess the situation thereafter," he added.
