The Taoiseach has promised to provide financial support to those affected by a freak ‘tornado’ in Leitrim village. Substantial damage has been caused to homes, businesses and public areas following Storm Fergus yesterday. Leo Varadkar has been meeting locals on a visit to the village today. He says a dedicated package of supports will require Cabinet approval, but some assistance will be offered in the short-term.
"Immediately the humanitarian scheme from the department of social protection is open and that helps people who are effected if their homes are damaged with financial support," he explained. "As well as that for those who couldn't go home, the council has provided them with emergency accommodation if they needed it. But the next step really is to engage with the insurance companies, most people here are insured but it can take time for that money to come through."
