The army's bomb disposal unit has removed a device discovered in a garden of a housing estate in north Longford.
The Trumra road and around 30 homes were sealed off for over four hours as part of security alert this afternoon.
Emergency services were alerted after Gardaí were told a device, believed to be similar to a pipe bomb, was discovered in the area just after 11am.
Some local residents were told to relocate temporarily while the EOD unit, based at Custume Barracks in Athlone, arrived at the scene shortly after 1pm and deployed a special robot to assess the scene.
Two members of the regional Armed Support Unit also attended the scene briefly as investigations continued throughout the afternoon.
Just after 3pm, the Defence Forces left the area with the device for further examination and the housing estate and the road has since re-opened.
Gardaí in Granard are appealing for anyone with information or who may have seen anything suspicious in the area to contact them at 043-6686512.
