The surge of RSV cases is "unfortunate" but unsurprising. So says Monaghan based GP Ilona Duffy, who adds it follows a fall in numbers over the Covid period. Last week there were almost 1,000 cases nationwide, the highest incidence rate on record. Dr Duffy says respiratory diseases are easily transmissible.
"Once you get it into a community, you tend to find that it spreads quickly and fast," explained Dr Duffy. "So typically when children are still in school and in creches we're going to see that rise, especially amongst young children as they tend not to be as good at their hand hygiene and that's not their fault, it's just the way it is."
