A Suicide Crisis Assessment Nurse has been approved for the Cavan/Monaghan area.
The post has been developed in line with the National Strategy for Action on Suicide Prevention to respond to the high levels of suicide in the region.
Interviews for the post are taking place this week and the specialist nurse is in line to take up the job early next year.
In June of last year, local TD Niamh Smyth called for a SCAN Nurse to be allocated to the region, alongside further help in primary care psychology support and the establishment of a Jigsaw-type service.
Last week, Deputy Smyth was informed by the HSE that a Youth Mental Health Service will be set up in the region and it's proposed that this service receives referrals as early as January.
Speaking on The Wider View, Deputy Smyth said extra interventions will make a huge difference:
