Community Healthcare in Cavan and Monaghan was very successful at the recent Tobacco Free Campus Bursary awards ceremony in Dublin, where financial incentives were awarded to support the implementation of the HSE Tobacco Free Campus Policy.
Cavan/Monaghan had two successful applications with both coming from Disability Services namely Clogher House Day Activation Unit Cavan and Day Activation Unit Monaghan.
Tobacoo Lead, Fiona Boyle says the aim of the policy is to help change social norms around tobacco use and vaping.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Fiona believes it is important to treat tobacco addiction as a healthcare issue, by actively advising, encouraging and supporting people to quit smoking
"We are in the business of healthcare. We do want to encourage people to stop smoking. We do know from the evidence that the majority of people who do smoke would prefer not to and if they're given the right treatment and support such as the free nicotine replacement therapy that's available to anyone who joins a HSE stop smoking programme and also the advice they're given by the HSE stop smoking advisor, that can increase their chances of stopping by at least 4 times".
