Stormont's Finance Minister says the upgrades to the A5-N2 road have been delayed "far too long".
Sinn Fein's Conor Murphy was speaking as he visited Monaghan today to discuss a number of projects that benefitted of cross-border funding.
The road has been identified as a key infrastructure project between the northwest and Dublin, but has been hit by numerous delays since first being announced in 2007.
Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound News from Carrickmacross, Conor Murphy said it must get underway.
Meanwhile a local Sinn Fein TD says the Government has the power to reinstate funding for the southern section of the road.
Works are progressing on upgrades to the N2 between Ardee and Castleblayney, but the Clontibret to the Border section has been halted.
Matt Carthy says it can be put back on the agenda.
