Gardaí in Cavan had to employ the use of a stinger to stop a car that was travelling at speeds of up to 180 kilometres per hour on Monday night.
The vehicle passed an unmarked patrol car at 170 kilometres per hour on the N3 and failed to stop when signalled to do so.
The motorist then "performed a number of dangerous overtakes" in order to evade gardaí.
With the assistance of Bailieborough Gardai and Cavan Roads Policing Unit, a stinger was deployed and the vehicle was stopped.
It transpired that the driver was disqualified from driving and he tested positive for cocaine.
The car was taken off the road, fixed payment notices were issued to the driver and passenger for non-essential journeys, and the driver has been charged to appear before court on the 9th of April.
