A Monaghan resident says that e-scooters have posed significant safety risks to walkers using the local greenway.
Edward McGorman from New Sruth An Mhuilinn Community Group in Emyvale also highlighted that the newly opened 30km Kingscourt to Navan Greenway and Monaghan's Rossmore Park could likely lead to the same problems with e-scooters as the Monaghan Town Greenway, which is a 4.2 kilometre long combined walkway and cycle track.
Edward pointed out that all those engaged in the creation of this great amenity in Monaghan should be justifiably proud of their achievement. Despite the popularity of the greenway, the resident said that he witnessed speeding e-scooters last week as he walked with his wife from the Coolshannagh roundabout entrance to the Greenway towards the exit at Old Cross Square. Mr McGorman said some of which reached speeds of 20 kilometres plus per hour.
The local man also said that new legislation regarding all aspects of powered scooters on public roads was due to be enacted this month, Edward says it remains unclear how the new legislation will be enforced and what impact it will have on the like of footpaths and greenways.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Edward McGorman explained that greenways are not safe places for the use of e-scooters, adding that it's probably only a matter of time that these motorised scooters cause an accident.
