Speed limits on almost 5,000 km of Cavan and Monaghan roads are set to be reduced from tomorrow.
Default speed limits on rural local roads will decrease from 80 to 60 km/hr across the country as part of the Government's Road Safety Strategy for 2021 - 2030. The first stage of this policy will see speeds on 2,155 km of local roads in County Monaghan and two and half thousand kms (2,500) of rural lcoal roads in County Cavan reduced tomorrow.
The meaning of the rural speed limit sign - a white circle with five diagonal black lines - will change from 80km/h to 60km/h as well. The current rural speed limits on national roads (100km/h & 80 km/h) and regional roads (80km/h) will remain the same for now.
New speed limit signs will replace existing ones to reflect this change and An Garda Síochána will be in charge of enforcing the new rules. Speed is a contributory factor in one third of fatal collisions and going slower significantly reduces the risk of death in a collision.
