A local TD is welcoming the announcement in recent days that a new specialised dedicated Garda Drugs unit has been announced for Cavan and Monaghan. The dedicated unit will be made up of Gardaí from various ranks who will specialise in the area of drug detection.
Deputy Niamh Smyth said that she was delighted to hear the confirmation by Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern on Northern Sound that the specialist Drugs Unit for Cavan/Monaghan and that the recruitment of same is at an advanced stage. Over €600,000 worth of drugs has been seized across Cavan and Monaghan over the past three weeks according to the Chief Superintendent for the region. The local deputy says as a member of the Joint Oireachtas Justice Committee, she had raised the depletion of staff dedicated in this unit on a number of occasions - most recently last week - with the Garda Commissioner Drew Harris. Deputy Smyth added that drugs are a scourge on this country and our communities and the unit announced is a very welcome announcement for the region.
