Gardaí in Cavan are reiterating their appeal for dog owners to keep their pets under control following a spate of attacks on sheep in recent days. A sergeant from the Cavan-Monaghan Garda Division told Northern Sound that as late as earlier today, they received a report of an attack on young lambs in Kilcogy which left several lambs dead and others injured. The latest dog attack follows others in west Cavan over the last few weeks.
The sergeant reminds owners their dogs are their responsibility and should be kept under control at all times whether at home or elsewhere. "Dog owners must be mindful of where their animals are at all times," the sergeant said.
Last week, the Department of Rural Affairs launched the "It's Not your Dog's fault, It's Yours" campaign which highlights the harm out of control dogs can do to people and livestock The national campaign comes after fines for some dog control related offences were doubled to €300 last December, along with increased powers for dog wardens to levy multiple fines, and increased funding for local authority dog pounds.
