Each year, members of the 'Mother's Union' try to highlight violence against women as part of the 16 days of activism against violence towards women. The group are holding an exhibition in the Cassandra Hand Centre in clones, which will open tonight at 7pm. The exhibition which is titled 'Souls Of Our Shoes' highlights stories of resilience from victims and survivors of domestic abuse. Heather Ellis is the Mother's Union President for the Clogher Diocesan.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Heather has encouraged locals to come out and show their support to such an important cause. "In talking to people who has seen the exhibition they seem to be completely mesmerised, shocked and overwhelmed. They see the visual impact of the pairs of shoes and they think of the person themselves who might have been abused , they think about the owner of those shows and how that person has been through such a staggering amount. From experiencing the exhibition, people then want to support those people who have been abused and to help build a better understanding by using a different medium. MU is very aware that men, women and children are victims of domestic abuse and believe that any form of gender based violence is abhorrent. We pray for a day when everybody in our communities can feel secure in the safety of their home and domestic abuse and domestic violence are no more."
