A new university course run by a Monaghan native is aiming to change how social media influencing as a career is viewed.
The new degree in Social Media and Content Curation at SETU is the first of its kind in Ireland. It's set to welcome its first cohort of students in September of this year, and will combine theory and practical elements. Dr Irene McCormick is the Director of the course. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show, the Rockcorry native says social media influencing is becoming the career of choice for under 35's. She added that it's a more achievable dream job compared to others.
"When people say i want to be a footballer, I want to be on the stage, social media influencer is actually far more accessible than that. It's much more possible than being Ronaldo! It's a legitimate career and it's built on the audience really finding you reliable, you're posting organic content, you're trustworthy, you're relatable. The underscore of that is that it is very taxing. It's a workload, you're constantly having to post to keep the algorithm going. So, it's not for the faint-hearted because you're actually the CEO of a small media company".
