Cavan and Monaghan is bracing itself this afternoon for "very heavy" snow showers tonight and into tomorrow.
The arctic wave which has descended upon the whole country is likely to last for another couple of days bringing with it north westerly winds.
Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel spoke to the Joe Finnegan Show this morning and he said these winds will blow in wintery showers that will lead to snowfall.
Cathal pointed out that that driving conditions across the Northern Sound region are likely to be "difficult" tomorrow morning. He added that "very heavy" snow showers are expected - with at least a couple of centimeters staying on the ground.
"Given the cold temperatures and the nature of the showers as well, it is likely that the showers will stick tonight. Temperatures will fall to around -2 or -3 tonight but it will feel much colder than that.
"With those showers we are likely to see accumulations of snow that will stick into tomorrow morning," he added.
