The smokey coal ban will come into effect in parts of the Shannonside Northern Sound region in September.
The Minister for Environment, Eamon Ryan, has signed the regulations that will see the addition of 13 more towns to the list of urban areas including Dublin, Drogheda, and Athlone, among other areas, where the burning and sale of smokey coal is currently banned.
While Fianna Fáil and the Green Party supported a nationwide ban this was defeated in the Dáil last December meaning it would only be extended to all towns with populations over 10,000.
Locally both Cavan Town and Longford Town will see the ban introduced on the first of September.
Once in place, any breaches of the ban will incur a fine between €250 and €1,000.
