"Smart" traffic lights could be used to ease congestion in Monaghan town.
Monaghan County Council has published a tender to have the existing traffic light system replaced.
At a recent MD meeting, councillors voiced their concern at the large volumes of traffic on the Clones Road in recent weekends.
Seamus Treanor said it was like what would be seen on Ulster Final day, with Cathaoirleach David Maxwell saying he noticed heavier than usual traffic on a Friday afternoon.
Councillor Treanor said that as well as adjusting the main traffic lights in the town, that there was need more a better system on the junction from Glaslough Street to The Diamond.
He said an intermittent system was needed to allow both approach roads flow easier.
Municipal District Co-ordinator Donal McElwain confirmed that a tender has been advertised for smart traffic signals to replace the existing traffic lights on the N54-Glen Road-Broad Road junction in the town.
Smart signals would be more responsive to vehicle demand and volume.
