Gardaí will be targeting speeding motorists as the latest national Slow Down Day began at 7 this morning. There'll be high visibility speed enforcement across the country's road network for the next 24 hours. 63 People have lost their lives on the nations roads so far this year 14 more than this days same day last year. Gardaí say the figure is worryingly high and must be must be prevented from rising further by working together to keep road users safe. Last year there were 184 fatalities resulting from 173 fatal collisions on Irish roads which represents a 19% increase in road deaths compared to the previous year. It’s the highest number of fatalities since 2014, when there were 192 deaths.
According to Gardaí todays operation is part of its overarching strategic plan to improve driving behaviour and promote safer driving practices in an effort to reduce the number of speed related collisions and save lives. An Garda Síochána is calling on all motorists to support 24hr nationwide operation targeting speed and to promote safer driving behaviour among the public.
