A local councillor has called for the development of Sliabh Beagh to be kept on the radar in a new tourism strategy for Monaghan County Council. Sinn Fein's Cathy Bennett told this month's meeting of the local authority that it must be included in the strategy, which is currently in the process of being drafted.
Cllr Bennett also requested that an update on projects in Sliabh Beagh be included in the monthly management report circulated at council meetings. "In the Sliabh Beagh Partnership, we are working on a feasibility for the whole Sliabh Beagh area and there are plans for cycle and walking routes.
"So it's about putting the ownership back on people to come up with business ideas in relation to tourism in the area. We will have the recreational areas; and new signage and logos will be erected across the three counties to encourage people to visit the Sliabh Beagh area," she added.
Meanwhile, Fine Gael's David Maxwell told those gathered, that he has received requests for the provision of a map in the Sliabh Beagh area, along with a viewing telescope. Director of Services Nuala Woods confirmed that she would "look into" proposals made by Cllr Maxwell.
