6 people from across Cavan and Monaghan have put their names forward for the Seanad elections.
The 6 include 3 sitting senators two sitting councillors in Cavan and a former TD.
The 3 returning from last term are Fianna Fáil's Diarmuid Wilson (Admin Panel) and Robbie Gallagher (Labour), and Fine Gael's Joe O'Reilly (Labour). Sinn Féin's Pauline Tully who lost her Dáil seat in November's General Election has been nominated to the Seanad's Cultural and Education Panel.
Cavan County Councillor Carmel Brady has also been nominated under the Seanad's Cultural and Education Panel and the local councillor who ran is the recent general election is currently serving in her second term as chair of the Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board.
Aontú's Sarah O'Reilly has also been nominated by her party to the Agricultural panel. the Bailieboro councillor has been elected to Cavan County Council since 2016 and has put her name forward in the last two general elections.
Senator Robbie Gallagher, a former member of An Garda Siochana and estate agent, is the current Fianna Fáil Seanad Spokesperson for Justice, having been elected first in 2020. He has ran 3 times in previous general elections. Senator Wilson has contested the Seanad elections 6 times and is a member of the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly.
Senator Joe O'Reilly who has been a TD for Fine Gael in the past was Leas-Chathaoirleach of the Seanad during the last term, and is a Member of the Sub-Committee on Children of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. T.P. O'Reilly of Fine Gael also had put his name forward for consideration by the party but was unsuccessful in obtaining a nomination.
While Cllr Shane P O'Reilly also was successful in being nominated to contest the election on the Agricultural Panel but declined the nomination on this occasion having contested the Seanad in 2016 and 2020.
